Meet Ze: she’s not your average twelve-year-old girl. Since the age of seven, she’s been responsible for supplying her family with water. Ze routinely carries 40 pounds of water on her head collected from a small, muddy hole infested with leeches, bugs, and bacteria — the only water source close enough to her village in Madagascar to access.

Ze recently dropped out of school in order to support her family. For Ze and 5,000 other girls like her, access to clean water can redefine her future.  It means more time for school, healthier families, and the chance for kids like Ze to, well, really be a kid.

Actress Ashley Judd has written a piece on the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby ruling, describing how the Court’s decision could negatively impact global women’s health.
“By giving credence to the religious view that IUD use is controversial, the Supreme Court may have inadvertently opened a door for attacks on federal support for IUDs and other lifesaving family-planning options that can affect women’s health beyond the United States’ borders,” writes Judd.

Respectability politics are so trash. Black men/Latinos in hoodies and baggy pants don’t deserve to be shot or mistreated just like women in short skirts don’t deserve to be raped. Any idiot with two brain cells to rub together would know that Martin Luther King was murdered in a suit and women in the 1800’s that were wearing long, complicated, thick ass dresses were still sexually assaulted. Stop that nonsense.

TW: Rape - Indian women protest rapes & violence, demand accountability
June 3, 2014

Indian police used force and have fired water cannons to disperse hundreds of mostly female protesters in Uttar Pradesh state where two teenage cousins 12 and 14 were gang-raped and hanged in a tree. Police have detained five people, including two policemen, in connection with the attacks.

The protesters, many of them women, were demonstrating outside the office of state chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

New rapes were reported from Meerut, Firozpur, Fatehpur and Bareilly where a 22-year-old woman was killed after her attackers gang-raped her and forced acid down her throat. Sex crimes in Uttar Pradesh have hit international headlines following the rape and hanging of two girls, aged 12 and 14, who had gone out to relieve themselves at night in Katra Saadatganj village, Badaun district, last week.

Reports also came in on Monday that a woman was allegedly gang-raped and thrown in a ditch in Sofipur village under Basai Mohammadpur police station of Firozabad district. She was spotted by police and admitted to the local government hospital.

The rapes in Badaun have laid bare the reality of caste atrocities in the hinterlands of India. Four of the five suspects are from the Yadav community, a powerful land-owning caste that holds political sway in Uttar Pradesh. The victims were from the Shakyas, by tradition peasant farmers who are often vulnerable to exploitation by the Yadavs.

Five people, including two police constables Sarvesh Yadav and Chatrapal Yadav, have been arrested in the case so far. Three other accused are Pappu Yadav, Awadesh Yadav and Urvesh Yadav of the same village.
